DESCRIPTION

In Gift 3, the 2-in. cube presented in Gift 2 is divided into eight 1-in. cubes.

Present the blocks in an orderly fashion to maintain the initial "wholeness" of the cube. Turn the box upside down, lid on the bottom. Carefully lift off the box, revealing the 2-in. cube from Gift 2 now made from eight 1-in. cubes. Your child will begin to see the pieces as part of the whole cube and their relationship to the whole.

Have your child count the number of cubes. Count the six faces of each cube, the twelve edges and the eight corners.

Putting the Gift away is the reverse of the presentation. Have your child reassemble the whole cube on the lid, cover with the base, and then flip the box upright.

Forms of Life:

Have your child use the blocks to represent things from his/her life. Your child may make associations and create stories, which you can encourage by asking questions. Children tend to do this naturally during block play. These associations between their inner and outer worlds are the foundation of real learning.

Forms of Knowledge:

Sorting, counting, arithmetic, fractions, and more can be reasoned with this Gift. Count the cubes and line them up, stating, 'one and one is two,' 'two and one is three,' etc. Your child will discover proportions and see addition/subtraction operations through 'half of eight is four' or 'two from three is one,' etc. Stack the blocks or combine them into layers to illustrate multiplication, division and fractions.

Forms of Beauty:

Start with the cube and progress one cube at a time -- changing and evolving a design, then returning to the cube once again. Encourage your child to continually modify a construction of the cubes rather than tearing down and rebuilding. One thing should lead to the next. This process promotes the logical and orderly development of ideas.
