As a homeschooling mom (having myself been raised by teachers) I was very excited to get involved with Baby Einstein because I have heard so much about it,and it wasn't around for my older kids. I bought the BE Language Discovery Cards for my 1 yr. old and I was VERY disappointed after looking through them. But first the positives: the pictures and words are large in size and colorful. On the back of the cards there are "Teaching Tips" and the word is written in 6 other languages along with pronounciations. All of this is wonderful, hence the 2 star rating. Now for the bad: I was disgusted to see that many of the pictures that are supposed to represent the words are stuffed animals, abstract toys or otherwise completely confusing items that do not represent the word well. Examples: The word "STAR" has a picture of a plastic teething toy that is barely shaped like a star. The word "CAT" has a picture of a plastic, slick and shiny toy cat and yet on the back the words "cats have soft fur". The word "HORN" is represented by a child's red, blue and yellow toy that actually has a plastic duck attached to it. ?? The word "BEAR" has a picture of a ceramic bear statuette; the bear is wearing a suit and playing a violin. The teaching tips on the back of the BEAR card say "this bear is playing a violin" and also "bears live in the woods". Hmmm... too bad they don't think to explain how bears who live in the woods get ahold of suits and violin lessons. Please... I know there are thousands of pictures out there of real bears, stars and cars. Don't expect to raise a scholar on these cards without doing a lot of "un-teaching". I think it is critical when a child is first learning language to not purposefully confuse the issue with cutesy, made up information. Since I can't return the cards,I will weed out the good ones (there are some!) and spend time and energy replacing the bad pictures with something correct.
